Hi,

I can play MKV files using this device. I bought this device directly from china by ordering online and paying through western uninon.

An important thing is that MKV files are just like a container. You can create MKV files to contain RMVB, MP4, AVI etc. files. It's possible that the MKV files you tried to play are using some other audio/video codec that is not supported by EN388.

Another experience of mine is that when i tried to play some BDRip movies (in MKV format) that had higher screen resolutions (like 1280x800 etc.), EN388 told me that these are invalid files and did not play them. So, i tried movies with normal screen resolutions (like 680x...) and they play smoothly.

Hi, I just confirmed - it is actually resolution scam: it supports 720 format, but in horizontal, not vertical lines.
Standard MKV video is 1280x720, and this is not supported by device (but 720x576) so MKV usability is practically none.

But then again what to expect: it is Chinese product and cost small amount of money. My mistake is that I did not read "small letters"

I purchased this dvr on ebay & let me tell you this thing has not let me down yet because if the video file does not work, then just re encode the file like I did using a third party encoder. To me this dvr is the best because first of all what ever I record I can also play on my computer by just dragging the file over onto my hard drive or by just using the dvr as an external hard drive, it's easy once you learn the interface. Plus other Dvr's/ Tuner cards suck because they will not let you use the file as you wish & with this dvr I can drag it to my ipod/video mp4 watch/any computer (mac, windows & linux)also I can drag any video to the dvr using it as an external drive to directly play them off the dvr or to record a dvd using my computer's dvd recordable drive, I can add as big a drive as I like. I can also drag video/music/photo's to dvr drive & off it onto anyone of my computers. Also I have a few lcd monitors in my car, so I sometimes take it with me on the road when I drive my car & I just hook the rca jacks up to my on dash rca connection that I had put in & I hook the power to it through my lighter connected power inverter & I then can play all my recorded video content using the dvr & also all my pictures & music. I bought this dvr because I bought two tuner cards & most of them record crappy as heck & I was running them on my Intel quad core with 8GB's of ddr3 & an nvidia geforce 1gb video card & these sad hardware based tuner cards sucked, they blurred the video & sound also was bad, plus they would not let me record my sat tv movie channels like I use to on my old tuner cards in the past, plus everything that I recorded in windows 7 media center had a drm on all of my video files that I recorded with win 7 media center,so that sucked (& yes there is a way to strip the drm off of it, but the files would take much to long to do). I looked & looked for a dvr recorder that actually worked that could record hd with also no monthly rip off fee like the one that tivo charges, so I found the (hdd media player en388) & my woes were over at least for me & every file on the (hdd media player en388) I have full total control over to do what I want with the file because every recording with the (hdd media player en388) is free from copy protection & also I can record my movie channel's & also it can be used as a nas box. Also every file that I record looks just like it did when I watched it nice clear & crisp. So to me this thing works wonderfully, I am even going to purchase a few for my step dad & my brother.
